At first, I couldn't believe anyone had actually asked about sorting inputs and outputs independently of each other, such that each sample input is no longer paired with its corresponding output.

WTF?

Then I read the second paragraph, in which the person asking admits the question is silly, but decided it should be asked anyway because

"my manager says he gets 'better regressions most of the time' when he does this."

Sigh.
