I generally counter this by not being motivated to begin with. Once you share your goals you then just kind of have to push through out of pride or simply to keep your job.
I definitely agree with this, and have seen in play out in both directions both for myself and many others before. Now, writing down your goals concretely along with timelines helps you achieve them, but something about telling others before achieving something seems to make it much harder to achieve.
