I had no idea, that explains so much! I was wondering how these open source numerical systems were building fortran code "so well", as in not a huge operational burden. My understanding is that the OSS fortran compilers are used for dev/debug, but when it comes to production, commercial Fortran compilers for your platform vendor offer much better performance.
